Sometimes you have to go beyond the clinic walls to get the most out of exercise-based rehabilitation. The clinic may not always offer the best environment to get you back to your best self in terms of resources. Moreover, sticking to the plan after a supervised exercise program is done is a key challenge, especially in older adults. A large proportion of patients end up feeling overwhelmed and eventually stop. Studies show that up to 50% of older adults stop prescribed exercise programs within 9 months after discharge.

Research shows a transition period of supervised gym or home-based exercise programs as a potential solution. In fact, there are studies looking into how gym based, home based, and online exercise programs compare in terms of efficacy. Gym-based programs have an advantage over home-based programs when it comes to control over quality of training, and better interaction between the facilitator and patient.

“At Healthy Movements Physiotherapy, we believe you deserve the best support when it comes to executing exercise programs. Your gains should continue beyond the clinic walls, which is why we offer gym-based services.” Adriana Pascut – manager

Let’s take a quick look at the key benefits.

Highly personalised recovery

The best rehabilitation programs take all relevant personal factors into account. The choice of exercises and environment should reflect your day-to-day activities to ensure a seamless recovery process. Sometimes, the gym can be the most ideal environment for that. A wide range of equipment and more space provides the therapist a variety of options in terms of exercise to ensure a personalised treatment plan.

Convenience

The program offers guided exercise programs at a gym of your choice as long as it’s within our reach. This proves convenient, especially if you’re a regular at the gym. For those who’re not regulars, a local gym can also prove convenient for regular exercise sessions.

Guidance

Physiotherapists specialise in analysing human movement and function, how it’s affected by conditions and injuries, and what to do to make it better. Our physiotherapists will help you ensure proper exercise form, volume and other parameters.

This is what it looks like in real life:

Months ago, a middle-aged lady walked into our clinic, on crutches, using only her left leg. The right ankle was secured in an ankle brace and couldn’t put weight on it. She’d sustained an ankle fracture about a month before. The doctors decided to manage it conservatively and referred her for physiotherapy management to help with facilitating healing and physical function.

We continued with the early rehab: getting her to move as much as possible. Manual techniques and electrotherapy were used to promote healing, minimise symptoms, and prevent potential complications.

Three weeks later, the fracture had healed and the brace was removed. However, she was far from getting back to her cardio routine at the gym due to a number of factors: some persistent pain in the injured area, ankle joint stiffness, and weakness in all muscle groups around the injured ankle.

The clinic environment gave us the basics we needed to get her better, but there was a better option: the gym. She loved the idea of continuing rehab in the gym because it was super convenient and offered an environment that would better prepare her for a faster and safer return to her active lifestyle. Staying fit meant the world to her.

We worked with her for almost a month, three sessions a week. By the end of four weeks, the ankle and other structures around it were back to normal. She’d reclaimed her life in a time frame that would have been longer if we hadn’t given her the opportunity to work in an environment that opened up more possibilities.

Whether you’re trying to recover from a recent injury or trying to beat a painful chronic condition, we’re here to help you heal, feel better, and claim the highest possible quality of life. Our experienced physiotherapists will get to the root of the problem, make a plan, and implement a treatment approach that addresses your needs.

Assessment and initial Treatment

Once you visit our clinic, we’ll conduct the initial assessment to fully understand the problem and how it’s affecting your daily life. The physiotherapist will ask you a series of questions to get the history of the condition, behaviour of symptoms, and how they’re affecting your physical function. Based on this, a physical examination will be conducted to get more objective data, which informs the diagnosis and treatment plan.

In most cases, initial treatment sessions are carried out at our clinic. This allows us to assess the situation even further while treating and achieve early rehabilitation goals.

Gym-based Treatment

After the initial treatment we transition to gym based rehabilitation. The process involves setting short and long term goals with you and identifying the most optimal exercise program based on your needs. Initial gym sessions focus on familiarizing and mastering proper exercise form and technique. Once you nail the basic exercise program, we advance to more variations and higher exercise loads and volumes until all the key goals are accomplished. Eventually, we withdraw from the picture: letting you take full control and achieve even more.
