What if expert Physiotherapy services could come right at your doorstep? Visiting a Physiotherapy clinic isn’t always realistic due to a number of reasons-be it transportation costs, distance, or severity of the condition. That’s where in-home Physiotherapy services come in; a great solution to allow access to professional services despite all the constraints that keep you from getting the treatment you deserve. Basically, a qualified Physiotherapist comes to your doorstep with all the expertise and clinical tools you need to make a tangible difference.
As your Physiotherapists, we’ve seen it first hand how home physiotherapy services can be a game-changer when it comes to optimising recovery.
One normal afternoon, we got a call from a concerned caregiver residing in a nearby suburb to take a look at a potential client who was in dire need of in-home physiotherapy. An 85 year-old man had just been discharged from one of the major medical facilities to continue with in-home care. He’d had a Stroke about 2 weeks earlier, which rendered his right side dysfunctional. He couldn’t get out of bed, stand or walk. Besides the Stroke, he was on a home ventilator due to difficulties with breathing caused by Pneumonia, which developed during his stay in the hospital. An in-home treatment program to deal with both problems was designed, consisting of chest manual techniques and breathing exercises to help with restoring normal breathing, and functional training to improve his mobility.
In 2 weeks, he was off the ventilator and could manage to sit up and maintain sitting balance in bed. By week four, he could stand with the aid of a single crutch. By the end of 6 weeks, he’d managed to walk with the help of a crutch. In four months, he was able to move around in and outdoors without any support or guardian supervision.
Now let’s take a quick look at the benefits of in-home Physiotherapy:
Highly Personalised Care

Physiotherapy is about maximising human movement and physical function. The goal is to optimise your ability to fulfil essential functional tasks at home and the community. For this reason, any effective treatment should pay a lot of attention to how you will navigate various physical challenges at home.
“The clinical environment does not always fully address this for the simple reason that it’s entirely different from your home setting, which presents its own unique challenges. For instance, while the clinic offers carefully crafted spaces for exercise, doorways, pavements, and equipment, the home may offer something entirely different. For patients dealing with conditions like Stroke, home physio eliminates the nightmare that comes with ignoring the practicalities of the home environment” Adriana Pascut – manager
Home Physiotherapy services deal with this problem much more effectively as it allows the therapist to take relevant practical factors into consideration. This translates to a treatment program that’s more appropriate and effective for the patient, which means better treatment outcomes.
Convenient
Home physiotherapy services eliminate the need for you to travel to the clinic. This is especially helpful if you find it too difficult to travel to the clinic because of a variety of challenges. For instance, elderly physiotherapy home visits can be a game-changer for elderly bed ridden patients who need specialised multidisciplinary in-home care. For others, it may be a question of time or lack of proper transportation.
Comfort and Familiarity
Accessing Physiotherapy services in your home means less pressure to show up on time, no need to get used to the clinical environment, and accessing treatment in your own space of comfort. This makes things so much less stressful, which helps with creating a supportive psychological space to get involved in the treatment. An eager and willing patient is a breath of fresh air for any Physiotherapist as it’s a critical factor as far as treatment efficacy is concerned.

As Physiotherapists, we believe movement is central to what it means to be healthy. This is why our scope of practice spans a wide range of conditions that affect human movement in one way or another. For instance, a patient who’s had a Stroke may need as much home physiotherapy as someone who’s recovering from a recent thoracic surgery. The reason is that they both need focused physical rehabilitation to get back into the best physical shape possible.
At healthy movements Physiotherapy, we particularly specialize in neurological physiotherapy, orthopedic rehabilitation, and sports physiotherapy. In case you’re unaware, neurological physiotherapy involves helping patients with conditions that affect the nervous system i.e Stroke, Spinal Cord Injuries. On the other hand orthopedic rehabilitation involves helping people with issues to do with the musculoskeletal system while sports physiotherapy focuses on managing sports injuries. Home physio for post-surgery rehab has been shown to significantly improve treatment outcomes almost as much as clinical visits.
